Natural Isolates

As a natural perfumer, I'm a big fan of using natural isolates.  In this blog post, I'll discuss what natural isolates are, how they are created, and why they are a valuable ingredient in natural perfumery.

What are natural isolates?

Natural isolates are single aromatic molecules that are extracted from natural sources. These molecules are responsible for the unique scent of various plant materials, such as flowers, fruits, and leaves. By isolating these molecules, perfumers can create a fragrance that mimics the scent of the natural material without using the whole plant or essential oil.

How are natural isolates created?

Natural isolates are created through a process called fractional distillation. This process involves heating the plant material and collecting the volatile aromatic molecules as they evaporate. The collected molecules are then purified to remove any impurities or unwanted compounds, resulting in a pure, concentrated aromatic compound.

Why are natural isolates valuable in natural perfumery?

Using natural isolates in perfumery offers several benefits:

  1. Precision: Natural isolates allow perfumers to create fragrances with greater precision. By isolating individual molecules, perfumers can control the intensity and composition of the fragrance more precisely than with essential oils or plant extracts.

  2. Consistency: Natural isolates provide consistent results in terms of scent and strength. Because the isolated molecule is pure and standardized, it will always have the same scent and strength, unlike essential oils, which can vary in quality and composition from batch to batch.

  3. Sustainability: Using natural isolates can be more sustainable than using essential oils or plant extracts. Because isolates are made from a single molecule, they require less plant material, reducing the environmental impact of harvesting.

  4. Cost-effective: Natural isolates can be more cost-effective than using essential oils or plant extracts. While isolates can be expensive on their own, they are often used in small quantities, which can reduce overall costs compared to using larger amounts of essential oils or plant extracts.

Natural isolates are a valuable ingredient in natural perfumery. They offer greater precision, consistency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness compared to essential oils or plant extracts.
